Saba Steel slashes raw water consumption by 50 percent
Saba Steel Complex has cut its raw water consumption in half in the first eight months of the year to late March 2019 over corresponding period a year earlier.
According to official statistics, the complex consumed 2.18 cubic meters of raw water per ton of hot rolled coils in the eight-month period. “In total, Saba has consumed 2.54 cubic meters of raw water per ton of hot rolled coils – which includes raw water and wastewater of nearby industries – down 50 percent over similar period last year when the complex withdrew 5.17 cubic meters of raw water per ton of hot rolled coils. 
Dariush Daryabar, who is in charge of Logistics and Technical Services at Saba Steel Complex, said the complex has posted 50 percent decrease in its raw water consumption as it has increased hot rolled coil production by 80 percent and sponge iron by 16 percent over corresponding period a year ago.
He thanked staff members for their acting responsibly and putting forth efficient proposals to slash water consumption and said on the back of round-the-clock efforts by staff at the Water Treatment and Distribution Unit as well as the Logistics and Technical Services Unit, Saba Steel has worked out and implemented corrective measures to lower its water consumption. The following are some of the measures Saba Steel has taken to that end:
Establishing constant interaction between staff at the Water Treatment and Distribution Unit so that they can better control water consumption and make optimal use of water resources;    
Making continuous, smart use of water and wastewater treatment facilities, and treating and recycling industrial wastewater;
Carrying out a project to withdraw and treat industrial wastewater of the nearby factory;
Retreating the wastewater treatment facility’s reject water through a secondary RO (Reverse Osmosis) package and returning the recycled water to the production cycle;
Applying effective chemicals and thickening the circulating water to reduce the number of blow-down tanks and cooling towers;
Preventing water waste by quickly detecting and fixing leaks, preventing temperature drops in cooling towers, reducing the average evaporation level, using nanotechnology in the optimal treatment of industrial wastewater and lowering the activated [biological] sludge by 60 percent;
And building and promoting the optimal water consumption culture in cooperation with the complex’s Public Relations Office.
He further said efforts to reduce water consumption and make optimal use of water resources have always taken center stage in Saba Steel’s production lines. “To that end, the complex has other projects underway. When complete, these projects will help raise the capacity and quality of industrial waste and further cut water consumption.”     
In conclusion, Daryabar thanked the complex’s senior management and all members of staff and line departments for their contributions – in different manners – to efforts to curb and slash water consumption.
