Indigenization process of imported X-ray tubes gets underway

Mobarakeh Steel Company (MSC), which has already placed closer cooperation with and support for knowledge-based companies, scientific institutes and startups on its agenda, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ashkar Parto Pouya Co., a subsidiary of Qazvin Industrial Park, to produce 75- and 100-kV X-ray tubes. Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari attended the signing ceremony.
During the ceremony, Behzad Shirani, the manager of MSC technical inspection, instrumentation and automation unit, said one way of measuring the thickness of steel sheets involves devices that use X-ray. "The rays this method uses are produced by fixed anode X-ray tubes."
He said the cold-rolled plant of MSC uses 22 thickness measuring devices at both ends of its production line to ensure high precision. These systems' hardware includes control boxes, X-ray generators, magazine standards and detectors. The X-ray tube, which is the most important element of the device, is located inside the generator. Thanks to high levels of wear and tear, these tubes are replaced an average eight times on a yearly basis.
He further said failure to timely replace the worn-out tubes can disrupt the production process and make it difficult to ensure the high quality of MSC products. "Presently these tubes are imported at a cost which is several times the original price."
Shirani went on to say that because of sanctions and the emphasis the managing director has placed on support for local knowledge-based companies, MSC decided to tap into the local potential to indigenize the production of these tubes. "To that end, after initial inquiries, MSC reached an agreement with a company based in Qazvin Industrial Park to produce these tubes locally at a sensible period of time and cut the country's dependence on imports."
He said success on this front would amount to a national achievement because in addition to steelmaking, these tubes are used in other arenas such as in medicine, adding local production of these tubes will not only save the country a sizable amount of hard currency, but future exports of these tubes can generate added value and bring foreign currency into the country.
In conclusion, Behzad Shirani thanked the senior management of the company for pushing the indigenization process and supporting knowledge-based companies and appreciated the cooperation of the Research and Development Department as well as the unit that repairs radioactive devices and Ashkar Parto Pouya Co. He expressed hope the "valuable work" becomes operational soon so that the locally-produced tubes are used in the production cycle.
